From 1887, Cézanne goes to the Tholonet to paint his youth's landscapes.
He settles down on the heigths to see those that could interfere or surprise him working.

Loving his solitude to devote himself to his pictorial researches, he rent a two rooms in the Château noir, known for its legends.

In Paul Cezanne's memory, a stele is erected in 1939 in front of the mill to commemorate the centennial of his birth.
Restored in 1985, the mill is today used for painting or sculpture exhibitions.
