Villeneuve Opposite the Law Courts and once the King’s gardens, this area underwent important urbanisation toward the close of the 16th century and now boasts mansions with richly decorated facades dating from 1590 to the end of the 17th century.

The rue Emeric David gives marvellous evidence of this era, namely with its Hotel de Carcès (the oldest), the Hotel de Maliverny at No.33 or even that of Panisse-Panis with rocaille decor dating from 1739.

On the Rue de l’Opéra is the Hotel de Lestang-Parade (No.18), the Hotel d’Arlatan (n°24) and the Hotel de Grimaldi-Régusse at No.26, by Pierre Puget in 1680. An aristocratic quarter, it is in this street that the real tennis court was established. It was transformed into a theatre at the start of the 18th century.
