Château de Vauvenargues
|
 |
The fortified castle set in the village Vauvenargues, is situated on a rocky knoll rising 440 m above a narrow gorge of the river Cose, surrounded north by the Ubacs and Concors mountains, and by Sainte Victoire to the South.
Vauvenargues castle, which has been inhabited by the painter Pablo Picasso and his wife Jacqueline from 1959 to 1961, is opened to the public, today, thanks to Catherine Hutin, Jacqueline’ daughter and current owner.
The castle was purchased by Picasso in September 1958. He and his wife rest under a mound facing the entrance stairs. On top lays a bronze: La “Dame à l'offrande”. The original piece created in plaster in 1933, was exhibited next to the Spanish pavilion during the international Paris exhibition in 1937, where the most celebrated Guernica was for the first time exhibited.
Some of the castle’s rooms were particularly meaningful to Pablo and Jacqueline, in their day to day life: the studio where Pablo painted few of his masterpieces, but also the living room, bedroom and the bathroom where Pablo had painted directly onto the wall, above the bathtub, a faun.
Today, you may again visit the castle from June 17 to September 18.
